Malla ton in vain as Odisha lose U-19 match

Second-innings century by Raghunath Malla went in vain as host Odisha lost to Tamil Nadu by 191 runs on the fourth and last day of their Cooch Behar Trophy U-19 Group-C match at Sunshine Ground here today. The win fetched Tamil Nadu six points, while Odisha drew blank. This was the first defeat in two matches for Odisha, who will next meet Chhattisgarh on home turf from November 21 to 24.

Chasing a daunting target of 435 for victory, Odisha folded up for 243 in the second innings. Opening batsman Malla waged a lone battle with a courageous knock of 108. He faced 293 balls and hit 13 boundaries. He kept the victory hope alive for Odisha, compiling 70 runs for the sixth-wicket partnership with Girija Mishra. But after Mishra fell for 29, the hopes evaporated quickly.

In their second innings, Tamil Nadu mustered a healthy total of 356 before being all out in 92.1 overs. Captain S Lokeshwar, R S Jaganath Sinivas, Abishiek Selvakumar and D V Pranaush hit a half-century each for the visitors. Among Odisha bowlers, pacer Preet Kanwar Singh Chohan was most successful, taking four wickets for 86 runs.

Earlier Odisha conceded a first-innings lead of 78 runs as they were bowled out for 177. At one stage the home team were 136 for three. But they lost wickets in regular intervals thereafter to concede the first-innings lead. Aakash Chandra Nayak was the top scorer for Odisha, making a 71-ball 46. He put on 75 runs for the fourth wicket with Anurag Kanojia, who contributed a 83-ball 38. R S Jaganath Sinivas was the most successful bowler for Tamil Nadu, taking four wickets for 60 runs.
